Tennis Emerging as Catalyst for Botswana’s Sport Tourism Growth

Botswana’s growing tennis sector is increasingly being recognised as a key driver of sport tourism, with the potential to stimulate economic growth, attract international visitors and strengthen the country’s profile as a sporting destination.

This was the message delivered by Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Major General Pius Mokgware (Rtd), during the official opening of the Billie Jean King Cup, which Botswana is hosting for the first time.

Mokgware said the successful hosting of regional and international tennis competitions demonstrates Botswana’s growing capacity to stage world-class sporting events while creating significant economic opportunities.

He noted that as Botswana continues to attract international tennis tournaments, the country is also positioning itself to benefit from the broader economic impact associated with sport tourism.

“The continued hosting of international tennis competitions creates opportunities that extend far beyond the courts,” Mokgware said.

He explained that hotels, restaurants, transport operators, retailers and other tourism-related businesses stand to benefit from increased visitor spending as players, coaches, officials, families and supporters travel to Botswana to participate in tournaments.

According to the minister, expenditure on accommodation, dining, entertainment and event-related purchases injects much-needed revenue into the local economy while supporting employment across several sectors.

Mokgware said the country’s commitment to developing sport aligns with broader national efforts to diversify the economy by expanding sectors capable of generating sustainable growth and employment.

Speaking at the same event, Botswana Tennis Association President Oaitse Thipe described tennis as a sport with enormous potential to become one of the country’s leading sport tourism products.

He said Botswana’s ambition to diversify its economy beyond traditional sectors presents an opportunity to leverage sport as a catalyst for investment, tourism and job creation.

“Tennis has the capacity to become a major pillar of Botswana’s sport tourism strategy,” Thipe said.

He noted that hosting international tournaments generates immediate economic activity while creating employment opportunities in event management, hospitality, security, transport and sports administration.

Thipe further observed that regular international competitions encourage investment in modern sporting infrastructure, including quality tennis courts, training facilities, transport networks and public amenities.

Such investments, he said, provide lasting benefits for athletes and surrounding communities while strengthening Botswana’s ability to attract larger continental and international sporting events.

Beyond the economic gains, Thipe said international tennis competitions also promote cultural exchange by bringing together athletes and visitors from different parts of the world.

He said these interactions foster friendships, strengthen regional and international partnerships and inspire young Batswana to pursue sporting excellence.

According to Thipe, high-profile tournaments also serve as an important platform for marketing Botswana internationally by showcasing the country’s hospitality, tourism attractions and growing sporting capabilities.

He said the global exposure generated through international competitions can encourage future leisure travel while reinforcing Botswana’s reputation as an emerging destination for both sport and tourism.

Thipe emphasised that sustained investment in tennis development, event hosting and sports infrastructure will be critical if Botswana is to unlock the full economic potential of sport tourism.

He said such investments would not only create long-term economic opportunities but also strengthen the country’s standing within the international sporting community.

The Billie Jean King Cup marks a huge milestone for Botswana’s tennis development, showcasing the country’s growing ability to host prestigious international sporting events while demonstrating the increasingly important role sport can play in supporting tourism, economic diversification and national development.
