Botswana’s mining landscape is celebrating a massive milestone. This is in the wake of MMG Limited’s approval of an approximate BWP 13 billion expansion of the Khoemacau Copper Mine, which has set off a wave of economic optimism across the country.
Behind this transformation is Huaye Botswana Mining (Pty) Ltd, which has been awarded the pivotal underground mining contract for this mega-project.
This massive capital injection is designed to supercharge Botswana’s mineral output, aiming to push annual production to approximately 130,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate by the second quarter of 2028. As the largest copper development project currently underway in the nation, the expansion guarantees long-term economic stability, effectively extending the mine’s operational lifespan beyond 20 years.
For local professionals and technical graduates, the expansion represents one of the most significant employment windfalls in recent years, promising to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs. In light of this, Huaye Botswana Mining recently initiated a massive recruitment drive across 94 critical fields, opening doors for a diverse spectrum of talents.
The recruitment drive captures opportunities across multiple sectors within the economy:
Executive & Strategic Leadership: Top-tier roles including General Managers, Project Managers, and Alternate Project Managers to spearhead operations and compliance. The Financial & Administrative Governance positions on offer includes Finance Managers, Payroll Accountants, Accounts Officers, Legal Managers, and Contracts Managers to handle robust fiscal management and cost optimization.
Further, the expansion presents an opportunity for human resources & skills transfer as the company pursues an intensive focus on industrial relations, training superintendents, and human resource officers to manage workforce welfare.
In addition, regarding engineering & high-tech innovation, there are technical opportunities for mining, civil, mechanical, geotechnical, and blasting engineers, alongside an emphasis on ERP Systems Integration and Digital Transformation specialists.
Moreover, hundreds of specialized opportunities for supervisors, surveyors, environmental officers, operators (LHD, grader, and water truck), mechanics, and essential support crews have also emerged.
The company believes that this multi-layered hiring approach will ensure that the economic benefits ripple down to local communities, from highly specialized engineering scholars to vocational trade workers and hospitality staff.
Apart from the immediate numbers, this project aligns perfectly with the government of Botswana’s long-term vision to foster an agile economy driven by private enterprise rather than state dependency.
