Speaker of the National Assembly, Dithapelo Keorapetse, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to embrace constructive dialogue, collaboration, and bipartisan engagement as they prepare for the upcoming parliamentary session.
Officially opening the Pre-Winter Seminar for Members of Parliament in Gaborone on Monday, Keorapetse said the gathering offers legislators an important opportunity to reflect on their constitutional responsibilities and strengthen Botswana’s legislative processes.
Held under the theme, “Fostering Dialogue Among Legislators to Strengthen Legal Frameworks for a New Botswana,” the seminar seeks to equip MPs with the knowledge and perspectives needed to improve law-making and parliamentary oversight.
Keorapetse emphasised that meaningful engagement among legislators is essential for developing laws that respond effectively to the needs and aspirations of Batswana. He encouraged MPs to work across political divides, exchange ideas openly and remain committed to advancing the national interest above partisan considerations.
He said Parliament has a critical responsibility to enact legislation that promotes accountability, transparency and good governance, adding that a strong and inclusive legal framework is central to achieving the country’s vision of a New Botswana.
The National Assembly Speaker further encouraged participants to take full advantage of the seminar by sharing experiences, debating emerging policy issues and identifying practical solutions to national challenges. He said the insights gained would strengthen parliamentary oversight, improve the quality of debate in the National Assembly and enhance the effectiveness of legislative work.
The Pre-Winter Seminar brings together Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum to discuss legislative priorities, governance issues and strategies for strengthening Botswana’s democratic institutions ahead of the next sitting of Parliament.
