BDP President Mpho Balopi Summoned to Court Over DCEC Corruption Charges

The President of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), Mpho Balopi, has been served with a formal charge sheet and court summons by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC). According to statements released by both the ruling party and media reports, Balopi and three co-accused individuals are scheduled to be formally arraigned before Broadhurst Regional Magistrate Maraledi Dipate on September 16, 2026.

The charges stem from an investigation conducted by the anti-corruption agency into alleged corruption. In a press release issued on September 2, 2026, by BDP Secretary General Kentse Spencer Rammidi, the party confirmed that Balopi had formally informed the Central Committee of the developments. The party leadership noted that it is monitoring the situation closely and will deliberate on the matter as further details emerge, promising to keep both party members and the general public updated.

Mpho Balopi is a prominent figure in Botswana politics and business. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Gaborone North from 2019 to 2024 and held the position of Minister of Employment, Labour Productivity and Skills Development in President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s cabinet between November 2019 and December 2021. Prior to his cabinet role, he served for years as the Secretary General of the BDP, playing a key role in the party’s organizational leadership before being elected party president in May 2025.

As the matter prepares to move into the judicial system, legal authorities and commentators emphasize that the serving of a charge sheet is an administrative and legal step in bringing allegations before a court. Under the laws of Botswana, an indictment or charge does not constitute a finding of guilt. Balopi and his co-accused remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, where the prosecution will bear the burden of proving any criminal allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.
