Botswana Young Tennis Stars Shine at ITF/CAT Championships

Botswana’s young tennis prospects delivered a strong performance on Tuesday at the ongoing ITF/CAT 14 & Under Championships, securing medals and making their mark on the continental stage for a second year in a row.

Leading the local charge was Francistown-based Tinashe Phatshwane, who teamed up with Namibia’s Johan Theron to clinch the boys’ doubles title. The pair triumphed over South Africa’s Mpho Bowers and Lebone Tlape in a tightly contested final.

Phatshwane’s impressive run continued into the singles competition, where he battled his way into the final. Despite a valiant comeback after dropping the opening set 2-6, he levelled the match with a 7-5 second set win. The final was decided in a tense third-set tiebreaker, which Phatshwane narrowly lost 7-10, settling for a well-earned silver medal.

Meanwhile, South Africa-based Tlape, also of Botswanan descent, took home a bronze medal after reaching the boys’ singles semifinals.

In the girls’ category, Botswana’s Malak Macheng also shone brightly, securing a silver medal in the doubles event alongside Zimbabwe’s Ashley Mhandu. The duo displayed excellent chemistry and resilience throughout the competition.

The championship, hosted at the National Tennis Centre in Gaborone, is a Grade III ranking points tournament sanctioned by the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT). Botswana is currently hosting both legs of the regional competition, providing a vital platform for young talent across the continent to compete and grow.

This strong showing by Botswana’s young players not only highlights the growing tennis culture in the country but also signals a promising future for the nation on the international tennis scene.
