PRESIDENT BOKO CHALLENGES BOTSWANA’S TYCOONS TO FUND INFRASTRUCTURE

In a lighthearted yet sharp departure from standard diplomatic rhetoric, President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko directly challenged Botswana’s wealthiest business leaders to step up and invest their personal and corporate fortunes into the nation’s social infrastructure. Speaking at the official launch of the African Hero initiative in Gaborone, the President singled out prominent tycoons—including Choppies founder Ramachandran Ottapathu and the influential Dada family—inviting them to join the philanthropic movement as donor partners.

Injecting humor into the address, President Boko jokingly questioned what the country’s wealthiest individuals actually do with their vast fortunes, asking whether they simply eat more food than average citizens. However, the light moment carried a serious underlying message regarding corporate social responsibility and community legacy. The President’s remarks raised a poignant question about why prominent business figures, despite decades of building successful commercial empires and accumulating massive wealth within the country they call home, have not historically spearheaded the construction of critical social infrastructure like schools and healthcare centers.

Extending an explicit invitation, President Boko urged Ramachandran to sponsor the construction of a new school through the African Hero model, even offering that the facility could be named after Choppies. The challenge frames a new expectation for Botswana’s elite, pushing local corporate giants to move beyond traditional commercial investments and actively contribute to the rapid deployment of essential public facilities across underserved communities.
