Keorapetse Hails Botswana’s Role in Hosting International Sports Events

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Dithapelo Keorapetse, has commended Botswana for rising to the occasion as a capable host of high-level sporting events in the region.

Speaking this week at the official opening ceremony of the Davis Cup tennis tournament currently underway at the National Tennis Centre in Gaborone, Keorapetse praised sport as a powerful unifier capable of empowering communities and fostering peace.

“Sport has power—it can unite people from all walks of life,” said Keorapetse, highlighting Botswana’s stability and peaceful nature as key reasons international sporting bodies continue to entrust the country with prestigious events.

The Davis Cup, a globally recognised tennis tournament, marks yet another milestone in Botswana’s growing reputation in the international sports arena. Keorapetse noted that the International Tennis Federation’s decision to stage the championship in Botswana reflects its confidence in the country’s capabilities and commitment to sport development.

He emphasised that, beyond competition, international sports events play a vital role in legacy building and infrastructure development. The recent upgrades and maintenance at the National Tennis Centre, he said, will serve the country long after the tournament concludes.

“Sport is not only about winning or losing. It’s about value creation, mutual respect, and understanding,” Keorapetse stated, adding that events like the Davis Cup reinforce shared humanity and the spirit of unity.

The Parliament Speaker concluded by underscoring the transformative potential of sport in Africa, noting its ability to inspire positive growth and integration across the continent.
