Botswana and Oman Break Ground on Record-Breaking Solar Frontier

Botswana and Oman officially launched the 500MW solar project in Maun through a joint ground breaking. This groundbreaking marks the official commencement of the nation’s largest green energy project to date.

In a ceremony defined by a sense of historical urgency, President Duma Gideon Boko joined leadership from the Oman Investment Authority (OIA) to break ground on a facility that promises to pivot the country from an energy importer to a regional powerhouse.

The atmosphere was one of rapid execution. In his keynote address, President Boko spoke with a striking lack of complacency, emphasizing that Botswana is currently in a “race against time.” For the President, this project is not merely an environmental milestone but a fundamental pillar of national sovereignty. He stressed that fuel and energy security are of utmost importance to the stability of the Republic, framing the solar plant as a strategic shield against the volatility of global energy markets. Emphasizing stringent timelines he gave the directors of BPC, BERA and other technical and operational officers, President Boko urged that everyone operate swiftly in all areas to take the country forward and turn this country around.

The technical backbone of the project was solidified on the sidelines of the ceremony, where the CEO of BPC formally signed the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This signing transitions the project from a vision into a binding operational reality, ensuring that the clean megawatts generated here will flow directly into the national grid to power Batswana homes and industries.

Adding international weight to the event, the President of the Oman Investment Authority highlighted a bold long-term vision: turning Botswana into a net exporter of power. He noted that the scale of this project—the most ambitious renewable undertaking in the country’s history is designed not just to meet domestic demand, but to position Botswana as the green battery of Southern Africa.

A key highlight of the partnership lies in the specialized hardware being deployed. President Boko praised the manufacturing capabilities of Oman, specifically noting that the solar panels are not “off-the-shelf” products. Instead, they are engineered specifically for the extreme conditions of the desert. These panels are designed to withstand and thrive under the high irradiation levels characteristic of Oman, which shares a nearly identical solar profile with Botswana. This bespoke technology ensures maximum efficiency and longevity in the face of the Kalahari’s intense heat.

As the ceremony concluded, the message resonated clearly: the era of energy dependence is being eclipsed. Through this strategic alliance with Oman, Botswana is moving beyond mere participation in the energy transition. It is racing toward a future where the country’s most abundant natural resource being, its sun is finally harnessed to guarantee its economic and industrial independence.
