Botswana President Buttresses Need for Water Security at Cape Town Summit

President Duma Gideon Boko has unveiled Botswana’s ambitious vision for water security, positioning it as the cornerstone of the nation’s economic future.

Addressing a high-level summit in Cape Town on Wednesday, President Boko spoke highly of the newly introduced Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) as a game changer, water scarcity, droughts and climate challenges. Boko declared that water is not merely a resource but the very essence of life and a prerequisite for prosperity.

He conceded to the escalating threat of climate change, marked by prolonged droughts and erratic rainfall, emphasising that these challenges have only hardened their resolve to take decisive action. The nation’s strategy is encapsulated in the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP), a comprehensive initiative driving substantial investments in critical water infrastructure.

Key projects under the BETP include water transfer schemes, advanced treatment plants, modern sanitation systems, and wastewater reclamation facilities. The plan also highlights the importance of international cooperation, citing partnerships with regional bodies such as OKACOM, ORASECOM, ZAMCOM, and LIMCOM. These are not just infrastructure projects but vital lifelines designed to ensure that every community, regardless of its location, has access to clean and safe water.

Beyond domestic benefits, these initiatives are presented as prime opportunities for collaboration with African and global investors. Botswana is actively seeking partners to help build sustainable systems that will power industries, boost food production, and create new jobs, thereby fostering a cycle of growth and resilience.

The urgency of this transformation was underscored by a stark warning: without bold action, Botswana could face extreme water stress by 2040. In response, the nation is pivoting from a reactive approach to a proactive risk-management strategy. This new approach involves safeguarding natural resources, embracing private sector expertise, and pioneering innovative solutions to build a more resilient future.

The core message from Botswana’s President was clear and unequivocal: water is the engine of Africa’s growth. Securing water means securing the continent’s future. The time for deliberation has passed; the era for bold investment and transformative partnerships has arrived.
