Botswana Crafts Its First Homegrown Antiretrovirals

Botswana has successfully rolled out its inaugural run of locally synthesized antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, formulated on-site at the Phakalane-based Portfolio Pharmaceuticals Botswana plant.

The accomplishment shifts the country from being purely an importer of vital therapies to a capable producer, shielding public health clinics against unexpected border closures, shipping backlogs, and volatile global pharmaceutical distribution.

The breakthrough stems from a strategic technology-sharing deal with a foreign drugmaker. Over recent months, Batswana scientists, chemists, and plant technicians absorbed specialized know-how, taking full charge of complex chemical compounding, sterile batch creation, and clinical-grade testing.

Before reaching clinic dispensaries and patient hands, the initial production runs must clear quality and safety checkpoints run by the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA).

Speaking on the achievement, Assistant Health Minister Lawrence Ookedtse emphasized how vulnerable developing markets become when foreign conglomerates redirect life-saving shipments to larger, more lucrative regions. Ookedtse pointed out that building an in-house assembly line gives the Ministry of Health immediate control over drug inventories while creating specialized technical jobs for educated youth.

Looking ahead, officials are pushing the manufacturer to not settle for the domestic market alone, urging regional distribution into neighboring African nations grappling with similar pharmaceutical deficits.

The factory’s footprint extends beyond public health into broader industrial strategy. By relying less on expensive foreign drug imports and fostering a homegrown supply chain, the country aims to retain capital and nurture heavy-industry skills within its borders.

Portfolio Pharmaceuticals Botswana has already set its sights on widening its catalog, with plans to absorb additional manufacturing licenses to churn out therapies for hypertension, diabetes, and other long-term illnesses.
