DPSM VS. BDU MATTER AMICABLY SETTLED

In a significant development that promises to usher in a new era of cooperation, the Department of Public Service Management (DPSM) and the Botswana Doctors Union (BDU) recently reached an out-of-court settlement regarding the recent impasse on emergency call duties for doctors. This positive resolution, detailed in a joint statement released on May 2nd, 2025, signals a commitment from both parties to prioritize the well-being of the nation’s healthcare system and the patients it serves.

The agreement follows the postponement of an urgent court application by the DPSM, which sought to compel BDU members to attend to emergency calls while negotiations on any disagreements proceeded.
Instead of pursuing a potentially protracted and adversarial legal battle, both the DPSM and the BDU have demonstrated commendable maturity and a shared vision by opting for dialogue and compromise.

The terms of the agreement, as outlined in the joint statement, are a testament to this constructive approach. Firstly, the matter has been withdrawn from the courts and referred to as negotiations chaired by an independent facilitator. This move underscores the commitment of both parties to finding a mutually acceptable solution through open and constructive discussions.

Secondly, the agreement stipulates that these crucial negotiations on Emergency Call for doctors will commence without delay and be concluded expeditiously. This commitment to a swift resolution will undoubtedly be welcomed by healthcare professionals and the public alike, as it paves the way for a clear and sustainable framework for emergency medical services.

Crucially, the third point of the agreement mandates that doctors shall forthwith begin attending to and performing all Emergency Call duties. This immediate resumption of full emergency services is a significant victory for patients across Botswana, ensuring that critical medical care remains readily accessible when it is most needed.

This out-of-court settlement represents a triumph of diplomacy and a clear indication that both the DPSM and the BDU recognize the paramount importance of a collaborative working relationship within the healthcare sector. The willingness of both sides to step back from potential legal confrontation and instead prioritize negotiation speaks volumes about their dedication to finding a sustainable path forward.

This positive development offers a renewed sense of optimism for the future of healthcare in Botswana. By choosing cooperation over conflict, the DPSM and the BDU have not only resolved an immediate impasse but have also laid a strong foundation for future engagement and the continued improvement of medical services for all Batswana. The nation now looks forward with anticipation to the swift and successful conclusion of the upcoming negotiations, which promise to further strengthen the vital partnership between the government and its dedicated medical professionals.
