The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) has on Monday announced its official membership in the Net Zero Financial Service Providers Alliance (NZFSPA) led by the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (UNSSE) Initiative.
According to a press statement from the BSE, the development reflects a turning point that reinforces its commitment to sustainable finance and climate action. “The announcement was made during the Arab Federation of Capital Markets (AFCM) Annual Conference held in partnership with the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA) on 13–14 May 2025 in Tunis, Tunisia, hosted by Bourse de Tunis,” reads the statement, further adding that the BSE will be joining an expanding network of 35 global financial service providers, including 23 stock exchanges, dedicated to aligning capital markets with net zero emissions targets. The statement further noted that by joining the NZFSPA, the BSE embarks on year long roadmap geared at advancing climate action through improved climate- related disclosures, the development of climate-focused financial instruments, and engagement with listed companies on transition planning.
Further, it noted that the commitment aligns very well with global frameworks like the Paris Agreement and Africa’s Agenda 2063. Moreover, the BSE further seeks to strengthen the efforts to promote transparency, sustainability, and resilience in Botswana’s capital markets, states the BSE.
Commenting on this milestone, BSE CEO Mr. Aobakwe Aupa Monyatsi stated, “As a leader in shaping the growth of capital markets, we are committed to tackling climate action for a sustainable future. Signing the net zero commitment aligns with our strategic direction, and we look forward to collaborating with the market to promote information symmetry and develop climate disclosures.”
According to the BSE, this development also supports the BSE’s broader strategy to embed Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations across its operations and to position the Exchange as a regional leader in climate-conscious finance.
